Fifty years
Exactly fifty years.
Lou couldn't imagine that it had been that long.
Yet he stood in a confetti-filled Madison Square Garden
It had finally happened.
The point was, in New York, no sports team had one a title since the days of the 1934 New York Knights won the MLB championship.
It didn't matter. The court was full of fans, rushing to just get a touch. Just a touch from the players of the 1984 New York Liberty.
Not only had they finally won the ABL title, but they had done it against the winningest city in the world. Cleveland.
Going into it, no one expected the Liberty to beat the heavily favored Cleveland Cardinals.
But they had done it. They won the series 4-2, capped off by point guard Ervin Johnson's game-winning three-pointer.
This moment would last a lifetime.
So many emotions were racing through everyone's mind, but Small Forward Bernard King seemed to go through all of them, with one line.
"Was this worth waiting fifty years for?"
The thought in everyone's mind was an resounding "Yes".
Fifty Years.
