William Hulbert was fed up. Fed up with the weak and dysfunctional league he had to lead his team in. He was reading the telegram from Keokuk, doing everything he could to keep from shaking with rage. How the fuck could a team fold like that, after only thirteen goddamn games, no less? He took another large gulp of brandy. Little did he notice the cigar ash fall to the ground. Hubert decided to take a nap. He would wire St. Louis and Cincinnati when he woke up.

When the firemen looked through the charred remains, they found one corpse, that of William Hulbert. Hulbert would be seen as a historical nonentity, a footnote in a baseball encyclopedia
