FDR reduces power of the Auto industry (for his future)

Could there have been a use of the New Deal to massively increase the efficiency of long distance rail roads (WITH strategic needs also in mind)

Could urban mass transit have been improved pr 1940 to prevent the more distans suburbanisation?

The auto industry was on the up in the mid 20th Century, and no sane American politician would deliberately destroy it. Especially not FDR, who originally proposed the interstate highway system.

Why would you want to hurt America's largest industry?
Giving a break to rail doesn't have to hurt cars at all, since the rail industry is mainly interstate & intercity. You'd give the airlines a real blow, maybe a fatal one for in-U.S. air travel, & you'd hurt interstate trucking, maybe fatally. You could certainly butterfly away commuter airlines. Not to mention a lot of the smog & congestion in L.A., & the congestion elsewhere, by making public transit better & cheaper in the '30s & '40s.:cool:
