FDR lives until 1949

Regardless of how it happens, suppose FDR lives until 1949. What would be the likely changes?

B Munro once posted something about FDR that suggested that he would've done some crazy ass shit (like forcibly handing over Hong Kong to Chinese) had he lived longer. I don't remember where he posted the article (much less anymore in the way of detail other than the fact that it showed FDR to be as Anglophobic as he was Nippophobic), so it would be a good idea to PM on the subject.

I seem to remember reading that he would have resigned as President the moment the war ended to become UN Secretary General. Unfortunately, I don't know the source.

If he doesn't resign, the differences start in 1948, where a Republican is elected President. Truman continued all of his policies.

This could actually fuck up Civil Rights a tad, Truman was the best on that between Lincoln and LBJ.

I don't think the Democrats would necessarily have lost 1948. At least depending on the candidate for 1948.

If FDR is POTUS he probably handles the economic transition better than Truman did IOTL. That doesn't mean that he's immune to a midterm House wipeout- as we know IOTL it happened in 1938, would have happened in 1940 were it not for LBJ, and nearly happened in 1942.

H. W. Brands mentions this in his recent biography. IIRC, FDR was telling many of his friends and advisors that this was his plan.

One way to potentially have him survive and retain the change in character assigned to the polio is to give him Guillain–Barré syndrome instead.

Indeed many medical historians believe he had GBS and not polio based on all of the symptoms.

GBS leads to paralysis and major pain but in 75% of the cases the patient recovers mobility, or at least most of it, within a year.

So if he has GBS and spends a year or more recovering, perhaps with a retained limp, then he likely gets the character building but not the health issues connected with polio.

Indeed he might well become something of a health nut to try and get as much of his health back (IE no smoking, etc).

That well could let him make it to 49.

Depending on how healthy he makes himself, he could live into the 50's.
