FDR knew

That should be interesting for Nagumo, abandoning the mission and destroying the entire IJN strategy for weeks or months to come...

The most likely outcome is for the US to send a carrier task force after the Japanese fleet, but at the first contact the IJN turns back, as that was what they planned to do anyway.

Tokyo will try to apologize but America will declare war anyway, and then declare war on Germany. So the war starts with weaker American morale, more battleships (useful for air defense, convoy duty and the Guadalcanal campaign, maybe some will be sent to the Mediterranean), and more fighter aircraft (some sent to Midway and the Cactus Air Force perhaps).

Once the US declares war, the attacks on Hong Kong, the Dutch East Indies, the Philippines, and Thailand will go as in OTL. But in the meantime they might not be quite as successful, because war will start a day or two earlier, giving the Allies some vital moments to prepare.

Maybe those B-17 raids on Formosa would actually happen.

It could end up being really, really good for Japan.:eek::cool::cool: She still invades P.I., but the U.S. doesn't enter the war... Also extremely bad for Britain.:eek: Now, Germany doesn't declare on the U.S. No U.S. involvement. (OTOH, no supplies diverted to the Pacific...)

They will go ahead on schedule, because they were in train when Nagumo sailed. There is no way in hell they're going to be cancelled.:rolleyes:

Perhaps. More a/c available for Britain, certainly. Also less urgency to get P-38, F4U, & F6F in service. Some chance the P-38 program stops after Britain rejects them. Good chance AAF never buys more.
