FDR killed Nov 1943

"The crew of the Iowa found time for much anti-aircraft practice, and escorting destroyers found the Iowa a perfect target for torpedo drills. On 14th November, the Destroyer William D. Porter accidentally fired a torpedo at the Iowa. Timing could hardly have been worse: FDR and all passengers were on deck watching the anti-aircraft practice."(The Iowa Class Battleship by Malcolm Muir)

The Iowa was informed and took evasive action to dodge the torpedo, but what if it never did. What If FDR was killed in a torpedo explosion? He was on his way to the important Teheran meeting if he was killed how would this have effected the war effort?

To be honest, given its size and FDR being all the way up on deck, it's not that probably he'd be killed by the immediate explosion, surely? The likely outcome of this is some unfortunate sailors die and a few others get to write memoirs after the war about being 'the men who saved the President'.

FDR Shared My Lifeboat would make a cracking alt-postwar film.

If you want to get FDR killed then Tehran would be a good place. I'm not sure of the details but there was a Nazi hit squad sent and the Russians got them. Have the Russians not get them. Maybe you can get all three Allied Leaders.

The propaganda blow would be much bigger.

As far as the running of the war is concerned most of the big decisions had already been taken. Germany First isn't changing, the atom bomb isn't changing, Overlord isn't changing. Nothing much is left to be decided as far as the war effort is concerned and no President is going to alter basic policy at this stage of the war.

There is a thread 'ahc: william d. Porter blows up roosevelt', or close to that. Last post dec 2012. Sorry i cant provide a link, my nook wont cut and paste.

He did eventually come around yes.

But in the 40's he was very convinced the Soviets were more or less good guys.

Compared to their competition (Baldy, Yelly, and Glasses), technically yes. Even the Allies weren't so pure, two Imperialist nations, whose shenanigans would foreshadow problems in a few years.

And, lest we forget, the term "Evil Empire" was coined to refer to the BRITISH, not the Soviets. (Doubly ironic- it was coined by a Republican-endorsing newspaper, and used in response to the "Sinews of Peace" speech by Winston Churchill.)
