I am fascinated by the simultaneous decline of the Fatimid Caliphate alongside the rise of another Ismaili faction (the Hashashim) that had initially been highly loyal to the government of Cairo under Hassan I Sabbah.
It would have been interesting if Nizar had succeeded Al-Mustansir in 1094 instead of Al-Mustali as Caliph. Perhaps this would have led to Hassan I Sabbah and his Hashashim working with the Fatimids against the crusaders, as Hassan I sided with Nizar against the Armenian generals who gained power in Egypt at this time. A more assertive Caliph, alongside Hassan I as Wazir, could have serious implications for Egypt, perhaps the Fatimid Caliphate becomes a larger equivalent of OTL Alamut, and thus a stronger (and much wealthier) focal point for the Hashashim. Does anyone think this idea has any potential?
