Fateful Day: A different Great War

June 7th 1914, Sarajevo, Bosnia, Austria-Hungary

Gavrilo paced the room quickly.

Why would they do this? In ten days Illic would arrive with the weapons and we would wait until that Austrian bastard arrived. We could earn our place in history and those backstabbing traitors at Belgrade call it off!

Minutes before he had recieved a letter from the leader of the Black Hand, Colonel Apis that had been forwarded by Danilo Illic, the leader of Princip's group. The had called off the assassnation of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Cabrinovic, another assassin, entered the room. For three hours they sat and tried to figure out what had just happened. They were told the plot would be the first part in the story of a Greater Serbia. The two men then chose to go rogue on the Black Hand. They would carry out the assassination by themselves.

Half and hour later when Princip crossed a street to get to a sandwich shop, he was struck by a horse. He died instantly.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand had his inspection of the soldiers in Sarjevo go by uninterrupted. many people came out to see the future ruler of Austria-Hungary. Among them were two of the men tasked with killing him before the plot was called off, Trifun Grabez and Nedjelko Cabrinovic.

Two days later when attempting to cross the Serbian Border, the men were arrested by Serb soldiers, shot and buried in unmarked graves.

July 1st 1914, Belgrade, Serbia

Dragutin Dimitrijevic, better known as Colonel Apis, was sitting in his office reading a book. Moments later an officer with two soldiers entered and attempted to capture the Colonel. Demanding an explanation Dragutin pulled out his revolver and aimed it at the officer.
"Dragutin Dimitrijevic you are under arrest for the crime of treason."
Accounts on what happened next vary but what is known is that Dragutin fired a round from his revolver that struck the officer in the shoulder but Dragutin was killed by the two soldiers stabbing him with bayonets. The body was dumped nearby and has never been found.

Many months passed by peacefully although cracks were appearing. In South Africa, Boers became more rebellious as slowly German weapons were smuggled across the border.

In Ireland the people were more rebellious each passing day before the peace was shattered with the accidental shooting of Father Thomas McElroy by Private James Roe. After the shooting, Roe was lynched by Irish Republican Brotherhood members. The Home Rule Bill may have been passed but as John Redmond of the Irish Parliamenatary party stated: "The chance for Ireland to be great is coming yet it looks so far away each time the fools in the Republican movement or the British Army start killing each other."
