Fascist or Communist States in the USA

What if a Communist or Fascist party gets elected to the office of governor, or becomes the majority in one or both of that state's houses, while being unsuccessful at a federal level? This isn't as far fetched as one might think. Maurice Duplessis, the Premier of Quebec durring the 30s might be classified as Fascist.

It would not matter in the U.S. case so long as the state in question remained republican in organization.

Basically this. There most likely would be a major, concerted effort to unseat that state government by the major national parties, but I don't think it would provoke a crackdown.

Promoting free and fair elections with in the State of Mississippi from say 1900 to 1950 would not have been much safer than promoting the same in Franco's Spain after say 1950.

It would be hilarious, though, as corporations appeal everything the government does and wins via the interstate commerce clause.

If you count Duplessis you have to count Long. Which measn the answer is "occasional sidelong glaces, but nothing more."

If Huey Long hadn't gotten shot in 1935 he very well could've become President.

He was going to have a lackey of his run in 1936 to split the Democratic Party campaigning under his "Share Our Wealth" program. The resulting split in the party would allow Alf Landon and the Republicans to win.

That would then leave Long as the obvious candidite to run in 1940 since his "Share Our Wealth" program has been demonstrated to have national appeal and nomination for the Democrats is up for grabs.

He probably would've trounced Alf Landon too.

IIRC correctly the Progressive Party controlled several states in the 1930s, 1940s etc without making much of a dent at national level. I imagine the same thing would happen

Using the terms "fascist" and "communist" probably obscures the argument - after all, if its the 1950s I doubt there's a chance in Hell either would get elected. But if its BEFORE 1940, then a different dynamic, and if its say after 1991 then another.

The problem IMHO is that for the scenario to work, the political dynamics of that period in OTL have to be significantly warped, and this would thereupon change the reactions of other political parties etc

Hmmm, not as clear as what I meant to be !

Certainly possible, but I doubt it becomes any more than a) a short term curiosity that quickly gets consumed by the two-party behemoth or b) the source of a short-lived freak-out press campaign (some Hannity-analog freaking out) that becomes little more than a historical curiosity.

Worst case if it happens in the 50's you have McCarthy delivering a herd of cattle on the Senate floor.
