Fascist Mexico Plausibility check

Let's say that some how Mexico goes Fascist. How could this happen? What would be the US' reaction to such a thing? Is this even possible?

You could ask Capibara

Otherwise, the PRI is so big, powerful and monolitic in this era that I don't think it can be topped so early.

What exactly do you have in mind?

Are you proposing something in the Thirties with Carrasco and the Goldshirts?

I explored this possibility once as the topic of a timeline, but I got frustrated with plausible Mexican leaders. The best way I found out to do it, was to edit Guadalupe Hidalgo/Gadsden Purchase, so the US gets more of Mexico, thus setting the seeds for a more jingoistic revanchist Mexican mind-set. Have World War I proceed relatively as OTL, but manage to pull a White Victory in the Russian Civil War. Warp White Russia into a Fascist state, providing support to Mexican Fascists, which there were...I just cannot remember the title of the group, and during the 1930's have Mexico become a highly anti-US revanchist nation that sparks WWII.

That is at least the most highly plausible chain of events that I could come upwith.

Their was a thread about this awhile back, I believe the conclusion was that Mexico's basically never gonna be able to become much more Fascist than it was OTL without the United States deposing the government.

Yeah, was this one.

Mostly it would be like Spain. Im not willing to bet anyone in Mexico would be stupid enough to declare war on the Wallies.

Depends how you define Fascism, President Calles was a member of the PRI/PNR whatever it was at the turn of the 1930s, after his term he controlled puppets from behind the scenes, until President Cardenas ousted him and his supporters.

The PRI was technically a socialist party but certainly not Marxist, had nationalist underpinnings and basically just keen on big government as such its an easy base for a leader to mold how they see fit. Calles was a fan of Mein Kampf and was beginning to organise paramilitaries in 1935 before Cardenas and the left-wing kicked him out. A big problem at the time was the battle between Church and State, which Cardenas pushed in favour of secularisation leading to low-level conflict in rural areas in the late 30s. Calles might have a powerful ally in the caudillos and clergy if he looks to create an understanding.

If Calles can keep hold say as Leader of the PRI and mold into the national-revolutionary movement he wanted, you could see a Falangist style movement forming. He also had strong ties to the Trade Union leadership and the military so its possible. That said I doubt a "Fascist Party of Mexico" will appear at anytime, the PRI is monolithic but it all depends who is in control of it really.
