wherein the Fashoda Incident escalates into a world war, with Britain + the Triple Alliance + the Ottoman Empire + Japan against France + Russia + the Congo Free State. The former side wins convincingly, although they're forced to make serious diplomatic concessions to keep the US and the Balkans neutral. Now it's 1915. The balance of power in Europe's completely dead, replaced by German economic and military dominance. Britain's not happy about this at all, but they can't exactly count on France and Russia to help them with anything. Meanwhile, China's a complete mess: an alternate Boxer Rebellion broke out during the Great War and was left relatively unchecked, leading to a continuing civil war between the xenophobic Qing, the highly corrupt and quasi-republican Mutual Defense Pact, and several regional warlords.

More progress on the Bring the Jubilee sequel map. The backstory here, drawing from some info B_Munro wrote in the comments to his original map on DeviantArt, is that Germany, Spain, and the US win their war against the UK and CSA, both of which totally collapse. The British Empire's mostly conquered by Germany, although North America and Australasia stick around as a British Empire in exile (the royal family staying with the latter, since Canada's threatened by the US). The Confederacy instead falls to a widespread communist revolution that establishes the International Federation of Social Republics, although a couple fringe territories break away in the process.

Germany's a superpower by the end of the war, but it's stuck in a vicious cycle of doubling down on colonial exploitation to fund campaigns against rebellions caused by its cruel and heavy-handed imperialism. A brief attempt at liberalization in the 1960s ends in a coup against "communist elements that had infiltrated the government" and the end of even the semblance of popular participation in politics. Things finally come to a head in the 1980s, when another global war breaks out between the German bloc and the Sino-Japanese alliance. The Eurasian War lasts four years and ends with a Japanese atomic bombing campaign that destroys most of Germany's remaining war materiel along with Berlin and several other cities. Since then, China's taken Germany's place as sole global superpower (with Japan in second place, although both the Japanese and Chinese governments would say they're equal partners) and is busy trying to make the world safe for some semblance of democracy while dealing with the beginnings of rapid anthropogenic climate change.

It's that Socialist Mussolini map I was working on a while ago. Not totally satisfied with it but it's close enough to being finished that it's on my DeviantArt. Maybe I'll come back to freshen it up at some point, I dunno.
