... we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
When Germany started Fall Schwarz in May 1942 it became clear that Breat Britain will fight for her existence against Empire of Evil (term used by Winston Churchill after hearing that German marine forces landed in Dover) and its ally - Soviet Union. Many men in British Empire were shocked upon hearing that two opposite countries - communist Soviet Union which few years earlier vowed to fight against fascist and creator of Anti-Comintern Pact Germany signed another Non-aggression treaty and later helped each other. Despite air strikes, Uboat campaign and cross-Channel bombardment Prime Minister rejected all offers to sign separate peace treaty. When British citizens began demonstrations, he sent most loyal police squadron to suppress them, arrest their leaders and began trials. Twelve men were sentenced to death for treason, Twenty were sentenced to 10-25 years in prison for defeatism. Many other citizens were visited by police for support that they gave to illegal organisations (which called for peace). Press was highly censored and only news approved by government could be published.
Dark times occurred for British society.
