Fake King List for British Monarch Claiming Arthurian Descent

I'm currently writing a bit on a half-baked timeline (with a POD around the time of the ARW) where the British king relocates to Canada in the 19th century (because who doesn't love that cliché?). As part of a propaganda campaign of positively Stalinist proportions, said king decides to ride on the wave of an Arthurian craze and "prove" that he is a direct descendant of king Arthur himself, even renaming the royal house "Pendragon" and probably renaming the poor capital of Canada Camelot or something equally tacky. (Of course, if king Arthur ever existed it's very likely that most of us are his descendants, but hey, monarchy is not supposed to make sense.)

Is there some pseudo-historical king list that people could buy in the 19th century that would include king Arthur? (If our Canadian king shares a name with someone on that list, he will probably give himself an outrageously high ordinal number, as well.)

Geoffrey of Monmouth

Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae contain's a pseudo-history of early British kings, including Arthur. Wikipedia has the list of kings here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...itain#Kings_derived_from_Geoffrey_of_Monmouth

Twentieth century historians consider Geoffrey to be mostly fictional, with some actual historical detail. However, he was taken pretty seriously for quite a few centuries.

Earlier accounts of Arthur (e.g., Historia Brittonum; Annales Cambriae) don't provide genealogical information. Later versions of the legend are even less grounded in history.

For your Canadian king, the hard part would be tying his genealogy to Arthur's -- there really isn't much connection between pre-Anglo Saxon dynasties and later kings.

Maybe he could try to create a link between Arthur and the Tudors, as they were of Welsh origin and so could be connected with the Briton old kings??

Not exactly what I was looking for, but interesting nonetheless. :D

Thanks! Do you know when people stopped believing Historia Regum Britanniae to be historically accurate? I have a hard time seeing a sophisticated 19th century gentleman believing that the first king of Britain was the great-grandson of Aeneas.

Yeah, I'm starting to think that not even the most dedicated propaganda effort can tie the House of Hanover to king Arthur - unless they claim that Arthur had an unknown son who had a bunch of adventures in Italy or something. I'll probably just rename the royal house Britannia (insert Code Geass joke here) or something, a name that harkens back to ye olden days but which isn't too intimately tied to the person of king Arthur.

Interesting idea, but I don't think I want to put the POD almost two centuries earlier just to make a propaganda campaign slightly more believable.

There is a family tree for the House of Brutus, the ancient kings of the Britons

Kings of the Britons

1144-1120 BC: Brutus I (House of Brutus)
1120-1110 BC: Locrinus (House of Brutus)

1110-1095 BC: Gwendolen (House of Corineus as Queen Regnant)

At this point I'll stop as we reach a colossal list of non-descript monarchs and I can't even begin to work out a chronology.

The only names I've noticed being repeated a lot are Sisillius, Porrex, Constantine, Marganus, Brutus, and Aurelius. So unless your Canadian king is very archaically named...

634-682: Cadwallader (House of Gwynedd)

Here the line of the King of the Britons ends, as the Saxon Kings carve up former Loergria between them.

However, some extra research allows me to do this...

Cadwallader (655-682)
Idwal Iwrch son of Cadwallader
Rhodri Molwynog ap Idwal son of Idwal Iwrch
Cynan Dindaethwy ap Rhodri son of Rhodri Molwynog ap Idwal
Ethyllt ferch Cynan daughter of Cynan Dindaethwy ap Rhodri
Merfyn Frynch son of Ethyllt
Rhodri Mawr son of Merfyn
Anarawd ap Rhodri son of Rhodri
Idwal Foel son of Anarawd
Meurig ap Idwal son of Idwal
Idwal ap Meurig son of Meurig
Iago ab Idwal ap Meurig son of Idwal
Cynan ap Iago son of Iago
Gruffydd ap Cynan son of Cynan
Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd daughter of Gruffydd
Rhys ap Gruffydd son of Gwenllian
Gwenllian ferch Rhys daughter of Rhys
Goronwy ab Ednyfed son of Gwenllian
Tudur Hen son of Goronwy
Goronwy ap Tudur Hen son of Tudur
Tudur ap Goronwy son of Goronwy
Maredudd ap Tudur son of Tudur
Owen Tudor son of Maredudd
Edmund son of Owen
Henry VII son of Edmund

Therefore, you can directly trace the royal line back to Brutus of Troy, if you want to believe Geoffrey of Monmouth. This last chunk is fact, while the previous sections are a mixture of myth and history, but thats the idea isn't it?

Here, I have assumed that all monarchs in between Cadwallader and Henry VII are unrecognised as anything other than usurpers, deniers of the legitimacy of the blood of Brutus and Arthur. But since this is a line legitimised in retrospect it doesn't matter much.

The thread is so cool!
Are you assuming that the line continues also via in-laws and the like?

Yeah, its kind of a dodgy way of getting it to Henry VII since while he was descended from Rhodri Mawr (Roderick II) he was descended from a rather unimportant descendant. Basically the OP's Canadian monarch would claim that his ancestor was unfairly disenfranchised.
