This was an idea when I played Hearts of Iron 2 as France. Now while I love that game for being able to play out "what ifs" like here in dear AH.com, I understand that some events, if not most, of what happens in HoI2, especially when you don't choose the historical path, tend to be ASB. So while I share this game, I hope you guys can pick out what's good and what's not.
Anyway, the whole point of this is what if the French decided to extend the Maginot Line until the English Channel? Is there any way that this could be plausible? Gamelin pushes for this and gets his way maybe? And after that, is it possible for it to be finished before the Germans invade France in 1940? This is considering any possible and plausible PoD/s starting from Jan 1, 1936 (the game start)
If positive responses were given to the above, will France actually be able to survive the onslaught even with the new fortifications? What happened in my game was that after dealing with Poland, they invaded the Low Countries as per OTL but stopped on my borders, thus a stalemate which they never broke. I understand that Mussolini would only declare war if it appeared that France would fall. However, while I held at my borders, strangely enough, they still did declare war! (Can this be justified? Perhaps Mussolini was pressured even more by Hitler? Or decides that it looks like the end of France anyway? Or ASB?)
Feedback appreciated. While I'd want to tell the whole story since events get quite interesting to say the least(such as no Barbarossa, thus Soviets declaring war in 1942, etc), I want to know if the above first are plausible, and if anyone's interested.
