Excommunicated England

Excommunicated England
POD
Harold defeats William of Normandy, William of Normandy is defeated and his army of Aquitainians and Neustrians flee back to their homes, and the body of William is sent to his children chopped up, Robert Curthose approaches Philip I of France to ally with him and together convince the pope to excommunicate Harold Godwinson and to start a crusade against him.

Robert is still a young teen. I'm not sure he's in a position to be worried about anything other than his own position.

Could Harold Godwinson be excommunicated for defending his realm?

As for Robert of Normandy, he's about 14 in 1066. I think the family's hold on the duchy will be in grave danger if William dies at this time.
