European Militarization

Post WW2 and excluding a Soviet war

What would it take for the European countries to remilitarize to a degree higher than their current OTL counterparts? (Higher defense spending, significantly larger armies, etc.)

Bonus points if the Treaty of Final Settlement with Respect to Germany is cancelled, annulled, or ignored.

Until the 90s, the European countries were pretty militarized. Honest demilitarization only started with the collapse of the Communist bloc.

Keep the Cold War going to the present day. The ongoing threat of the Soviet Block would keep Europe militarized.

Perhaps Huntington's Clash of Civilisations is seen as legitimate at some point and Europeans go nuts for expeditionary warfare in Africa and the Mid East, arming up to undertake this task.

Greece and Italy go red during late 40s, when the Berlin Wall comes down things get even uglier in Southern Europe, throw in a stronger Soviet Union that reformed earlier and Europe is much more volatile.

The whole process of unification of european countries culminating in the EU should face a hurdle. It could happen if the soviet union is destroyed in the 70s.A common enemy is removed and in the quest for finding another(which always happens-take for example the ultra nationalism now against outsiders),remilitarisation is highly possible.

Maybe the USA become just 'partially' isolationist post-wwII, basically the 'limit' themselfs to bankrolling both financially and politically an european military alliance and go for the OTL Marshall Plan (as losing the european market will be an enourmous hit for their economy and a big boon for the URSS) but not putting troops in the old continent.
