Europa Universalis III

For those who don't have EU3, can you explain the color coding?
Lime green is your own country
Slightly darker shade of lime green are your vassals
Teal is a country you have a royal marriage with
Light blue are your allies
Gray are neutral countries.
If a country has lime green slash marks through it, as is the case in Luebeck and Mecklenburg, that means whatever country it is had a land claim on it by you.

Hearts of Iron taught me geography.. EU III is teaching me geography except with the borders all wrong and the names of places inaccurate.. :D

Has anyone played with any of the Asian countries, in Indonesia for instance? Is it possible to become European-powerful with them?

No, you can't become European powerful as anyone outside of Europe. They have multipliers that make it harder for you to research the further you are away from Europe, with the Americas and Africa being the worst if I remember correctly. You can get very powerful as an Asian nation compared to those around you, just don't take on any Europeans and you'll be fine.

That sucks, I was hoping to do a China: Super Power empire with them and take over the world? What about Eurasian countries? I always wanted to recreate the Mongolian empire.

Eurasian countries would be hard, but I could see somebody doing Superpower Empire with China. It might lag in tech, but it's got various other advantages to make up for it.

Actually, it is ridiculously easy to go european with China. In fact, in the first patches, every game became a sinowank, since even the AI managed to conquer half of Eurasia with China.

And remember, there are events that allow you to become a member of a more advanced tech group if you are playing an uncivilized country and check several conditions.

Sounds good.

Do you think I should get the expansion? Will it improve the game?

I do remember trying to get a super power empire with Incas! But it just wouldn't happen...would be interesting if the Incas managed to conquer Europe though :D

lol... no

I hear Napoleon's Ambition is the greatest thing since Al Gore invented the internet! :D

I want to get NA, but currently don't have the cash. The easiest way to improve the game is to play using the Magna Mundi mod.

But imagine NA + magna Mundi mod! *has geekasm, and falls out of chair*

It's really quite nice. :) Worth it, IMHO.

NA is definitely worth it. Magna Mundi makes it all the better. :) In fact, I find I don't want to play vanilla EU III anymore, even with patches and expansion. Magna Mundi is just that good.

ALSO - If you've seen the Paradox boards recently, a new expansion has just been announced. In Nomine will start the game in 1399, giving 50 more years of history, Byzantines, more options, all that fun stuff. Go and take a look at the forum. Should be out before summer. *drools*

EU III Expansion "In Nomine" revealed
New York, USA (March 6, 2008) – Paradox Interactive announced today a new expansion for critically acclaimed Europa Universalis III.

EU III - In Nomine (requires Napoleon's Ambition) is scheduled for a release before summer and fans of the series and strategy games can discuss the game further with more than 90,000 other gamer on the Paradox Forums.

"The idea for this expansion was born on our forums, said Producer and Head of the Paradox development team Johan Andersson". "In this case we felt that the forum wishes for the next EU III expansion was aligned with our visions for Europa Universalis III and we are really excited to launch this product".

Features include:

Start in October 1399 and the coronation of Henry IV of England. Experience over 50 more years of gameplay, experiencing the Byzantine Empire, Tamerlane and the end of the Hundred Years War.

Better overview of the decisions needed to shape the future of your country. Strive to create Great Britain, Make Paris worth a Mass, or institute an East Indian Trade Company. Act, rather than react, and implement decisions on both country and province level, with the new decision system, including hundreds of different decisions depending on situation.

Experience the new Mission System, where the player and AI alike will be given goals to achieve, providing endless replayability by guiding history along different tracks every time.

Rebels with a Cause. There are countless types of rebels, all with different goals, and different abilities. You may get colonial rebels in your colonies determined to get representation or independence, you may get reactionary nobles rising up to put the serfs back where the belong. Crush them by force, or negotiate with them, or even worse, watch them enforce their demands on your country.

Religious tolerance now depends on the ideas and decisions you take, making it a new layer of strategy. As cardinals stay loyal longer, the power of the Papa Controller has grown, as he can now excommunicate rulers, and call crusades against infidels.
Revised AI, focusing on strategic top level goals, with support for fully scriptable logics.

Can't wait for it! I just hope a compatible version of Magna Mundi Gold (or Gold 2) is released quickly when it comes out.

Heck, I'll be happy just to keep Thrace out of the hands of those deadly Ottomans.
Tvuth.

My entire economic development as Byzantines takes decades to recover because I have to spent every available credit to stomp on the Ottomans to stop them from killing me. And my allies in Eastern Europe couldn't be worthless if they actively attacked me.

As a matter of fact it'd be easier if they declared war on me, that way I'd be able to grab their territory and build up an economic base to become powerful. As it stands now, I have to watch them ineffectual sends dribs and drabs of infantry in packets of 1,000 and 3,000 to get slaughtered by the Ottomans. And naturally as an alliance leader every whomping they get is reflected in the balance of the points of the war that I have to look at. Sometimes, you just want to send them a message - "Uh, fellas, seriously. Can you just stay on your side and give me some money instead? No. Seriously. It's cool that you try and everything, but you are Britney Spears 2008 and I need Britney Spears 1999 or at the very least no Britney Spears at all. Just saying".

The only ones that help are the other nations of the Anatolian plains. It only is a matter of time before the heathen Turks make them come over to my side and they fight fairly effectively. They also weaken themselves fighting Ottomans, allowing me to backstab them when the time is right to take over their lands to help me build a stronger empire to wipe out the Turks. Sneaky, but, hey, I am the Second Rome. It's in the name of greater good.
