Ethiopia invades Somalia 1969

Following the 1969 Somali coup d'état, could Ethiopia invade and overthrow the new communist government

Would Ethiopia be successful

What would be the impact of a 1969 Somali-Ethiopian war

It could, considering the Somali Army hadn't been ramped up by Soviet support yet and was somewhat on the level of the Ethiopian military.

EDIT: I’m on my phone and I’ll elaborate when I can get on a computer.

Imperial Ethiopia is definitely capable of invading Somalia and overthrowing the communist government or at the very least, supporting various factions in an earlier Somali Civil War that make sure that Ethiopia remains the dominant power on the Horn. Haile Selassie could use this to secure more aid from the US but I'm not sure how successful this will be. The impacts of such a war could cause an earlier Somali Civil War where the new Somali government attempts to remain in power while various clans fight against one another but this doesn't mean there won't be any effects on Ethiopia. With the Somali Democratic Republic being eliminated earlier on, the Ogaden War is probably butterflied away and you could see the Eritrean insurgency being weakened and potentially reduced to nothing more than disorganized bands. In the late 60s and early 70s, the Eritrean Liberation Movement was becoming increasingly split between not only ideological lines but along religious and ethnic lines that sparked the Eritrean Civil Wars as the Eritrean People's Liberation Front was established. Israeli advisors oversaw training of new Ethiopian counterinsurgency units that managed to actually contain the Eritrean insurgency in 1970-71 but lost ground to the Eritrean rebels in the years leading up to the 1974 Revolution. However, this doesn't mean Ethiopia doesn't face problems in other regions of her Empire - there were quite a few rebellions in Bale and Ogaden but the main issue that the Imperial regime had yet to deal with, was the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party. According to Kiflu Tadesse's "The Generation", the EPRP had been planning to launch an insurgency in southern Ethiopia and the Ethiopian invasion of Somalia might be the casus belli for which the EPRP launches its guerrilla strategy with the support of Somalis in southern Ethiopia and hampers the Ethiopian war effort - or worse, it could spark an earlier Ethiopian Civil War.
