Eritrea UDI during world war 2

Could the Italian population of Eritrea declare a Unilateral declaration of independence during World War 2 to avoid being annex by Ethiopia.

Would the allies accept it or would they crush it.

What would it's relationship be with the native Eritreans

How long would it last

No, especially as they were struggling to wage guerilla for Italy (and not Eritrea) against the Allies who would thoroughly crush it. In fact, this would make it even more likely that Eritrea is subsumed into Ethiopia; after all, if independence for it is declared by the evil Italian occupiers, then it must mean indipendence runs contrary to what the Eritreans want. (Which is false, but eh, such is the nature of bias.)

The native Eritreans would probably be interested in cooperation, but eager to assume control as they are a large majority outside of Asmara. It just would not last.

This would probably provide more justification to Haile Selassie’s claims to Eritrea to protect against the Italians and portray Ethiopia as Eritrea’s Big Brother. The Italian settlers would be moved to South Africa and Australia as they were IOTL.

They could include some token Eritreans. Would that help ?
