Epidemic at the Land of the Morning Calm - Expanded TL of Seoul Station and Train To Busan

Now that the trailer is out, I believe that the Whole Korean Peninsula is wiped out and left abandoned for a good 4 years now, I guess this timeline would have to redone after the movie comes out

This timeline is basically a fanfiction timeline before the sequel was announced. I opted to go the 28 Days Later route where the zombie apocalypse does not last long.

Anyone can redo this timeline if they want. Currently have no plans to reboot it.

I wonder how the COVID-19 epidemic goes in South Korea ITTL--I can see the Korean military quarantining Daegu at the first sign of outbreak there, along with even more mass testing, as no one wants a repeat of the Seoul zombie outbreak (even though COVID-19 is less lethal than that)...

It is also safe to say that the COVID-19 Epidemic would be take more seriously.
I'd say the COVID-19 Pandemic would be butterflied away in this timeline. The Chinese Communist Party with all their craziness and mad hold on power would have been knocked into their senses to act rapidly once it appears in November 2019 ITTL (if if does even appear).

Same way how SARS would be butterflied away in the Death of a Nation - 28 Days Later Timeline.

BRP Tarlac to deploy to South Korea - DND
BRP_Tarlac_homebound.jpg

The Navy's newest ship, the BRP Tarlac, will be deployed to South Korea to assist in the evacuation of Filipino nationals in the country in a statement by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana with President Rodrigo Duterte in yesterday's press briefing at the Malacanang Palace.

"We cannot afford to abandon our countrymen in South Korea as this plague affects their country." President Duterte said.

When asked about the status of the Filipinos in Korea, Duterte said that the Department of Foreign Affairs has been hard at work contacting the Philippine Embassy at Seoul. Reports stated the Embassy was evacuated at dawn and resumed operations in Busan, which has been declared the provisional capital of Korea. According to the DFA, there are over 65,000 Filipinos in South Korea as of 2015. Of that, only 20% of that has been accounted. There are already confirmed reports of Filipinos among the casualties of the outbreak. Updates will continue to follow at the DFA's website.

On July 20th, 2016, a previously unknown disease broke out in Seoul. Overnight it spread to roughly the entire country, save for a the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula as the ROK Armed Forces established a defensive perimeter in Busan. The disease is believed to be a mutation of rabies. The mode of infection is confirmed to be from direct-fluid contact, as it spreads through bites from infected personnel. These infected are dangerous and will respond with homicidal aggression to the nearest uninfected individual. They have earned the nickname "zombies" due to their similar behavior from the horror creatures in modern-day pop-culture.

"There will be no AFP boots on the ground." Lorenzana affirmed. "We cannot risk any casualties among our service members. The ship will strictly be in the Port of Busan ready to pick up any Filipino national that wishes to return home."

Lorenzana further emphasized that the Tarlac will be joining the RIMPAC fleet led by the United States Navy aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis. The RIMPAC exercises in the Hawaii area were diverted to assist in the blockade of the Korean Peninsula. Only the exercises in the southern California area will continue.

"In this way, we affirm our responsibilities to help our South Korean allies in need." Lorenzana later added.

This deployment to South Korea is not the first time for the AFP. Back then in 1950, under President Elipido E. Quirino, the Philippines sent troops to South Korea as part of the United States-led United Nations forces to protect it from invasion by the North Koreans. The Philippine Expeditionary Force to Korea (PEFTOK) comprised of 7,500 men along with numerous ships, tanks, armored vehicles, trucks, and jeeps. The Filipinos fought both the North Koreans and the communist Chinese forces from 1950 to 1953. 112 Filipinos were killed-in-action during the Korean War. Ever since, this deployment has strengthened diplomatic relations with South Korea. In November 2013, South Korea sent troops and relief goods to affected areas in the Philippines in the aftermath of Tyhoon Yolanda. Now, the Filipinos will return to South Korea to assist their allies.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye, speaking from Busan via telephone call, personally thanks Duterte for the assistance.

The BRP Tarlac is the lead-ship of the Tarlac-class strategic sealift vessel based on the Indonesian Navy's Makassar-class landing platform dock. Like the Makassar-class, it is built at the PT PAL shipyard in Surabaya, Indonesia. The construction of the Tarlac was awarded on July 9, 2013 and the keel was laid-down on July 5, 2015. The Tarlac began sea trials on January 18, 2016 before being delivered to the Philippines. The ship has a Standard load of 7,400 tons and a full load of 11,583 tons. The ship has a complacement of 500 sailors and officers. It has a cruising speed of 13 knots (24 km/h) and a maximum of 16 knots (30 km/h). Ships of this class can stay at sea for 30 days before needing replenishment. The ship carries two landing craft - utility (LCU) or landing craft mechanized (LCM) boats in addition to two RHIBs. It has two flight decks for naval helicopters. For the ship weapons, it is lightly armed for a purely defensive role. It has one 76 mm (3 in) main gun on foredeck, two 25 mm secondary guns, one each on port and starboard sides, and six .50 caliber machine guns meant to engage smaller boats and low-flying helicopters. She is currently the largest ship in the navy's fleet. Another ship of the same class, the BRP Davao del Sur (LD-602) is expected to be launched this September and will be delivered to the Philippine Navy by May 2017.

The Philippines is not ready for a KZ Virus epidemic.

Difference between this Timeline and the Official Canon
As you guys know, I made this timeline around September 2017 and the announcements for a sequel were not yet confirmed. They were still rumors at the time I started this. Since the producers did not really expound on what type of zombie they were using, I interpreted their zombies as a technically-living ones so I went the route of 28 Days Later-style where the outbreak is contained and the zombies die of starvation within a month of so.

Peninsula was only confirmed around late 2018 or somewhere in 2019. Since its plot takes place four years after the outbreak decimates the entire Korean Peninsula, this is where the path forks between my fanfic take and the official canon.

What's the population of Korea after the K-Z Virus and Containment? The 7 million casualty figures seems very low given South Korea's heavy population density and lack of personal firearms.

In my fanfic timeline, I think it would be around 1-3 million. I went for the 28 Days Later approach.

In the official canon however, we shall see what Peninsula brings us.

The most trending memes and internet culture for 2016

January:
- Squidward Dab
- Fred the Fish eating a burger

February:
- Pacha Edits (The Emperor's New Groove) - When the sun hits that ridge just right

March:
- Top 10 Anime Battles

April:
- Confused Mr. Krabs

May:
- Dat Boi (frog on a unicycle)
- Running Man Challenge - "My Boo" by Ghost Town DJ

June:
- Harambe - On May 28, 2016, a three-year-old boy climbed into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden and was grabbed and dragged by Harambe, a 17-year-old western lowland gorilla. Fearing for the boy's life, a zoo worker shot and killed Harambe. The meme would become popular by the following month.
- SpongeGar/Primitive Sponge/Caveman Spongebob

July:
- Arthur's First (Clenched Fist)
- Zombie Apocalypse Memes - Following the outbreak in the Korean Peninsula, the Internet literally exploded about the zombie genre. From Resident Evil to Left 4 Dead to survivalist memes, this would be the trending meme culture for the last half of the month. Due to panic and often excitement, there was an increased sale of guns, melee weapons, and camping equipment throughout the United States. Some people would also modify their cars to resemble those post-apocalyptic vehicles seen in movies and games. There would also be increased enrolment in shooting and survival courses.

August:
- Pokémon Go - As the situation in Korea stabilized, the long-awaited app that would put the player in the hands of a simulated Pokémon trailer was finally released worldwide. It seemed the world's attention was shifted from the epidemic in Korea to this real-time game. Crowds often formed, despite warnings from authorities who were not taking chances just in case of a sudden appearance of an outbreak despite it being controlled. However, the game's popularity would decrease by September.
- Rio de Jainero 2016 Summer Olympics - Another major event that shifted the world's focus from Korea. Both Koreas withdrew before the Olympics started.

September:
- World War III Memes - In response to the Second Korean War and North Korea's usage of a nuclear weapon on the town of Paju to prevent the Infected from going to their country, many thought that the Third World War would finally break out. However this was not the case as the U.S. and their allies worked together with China and Russia in ensuring that no derelict ship or plane makes it out of the Korean Peninsula. The war only lasted a mere three days since the U.S. and their allies had complete control of the air and sea around Korea. The People's Republic of China also stepped in and removed Kim Jong-Un in a coup. Nonetheless, countless references to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, 3, World in Conflict, Red Dawn, Red Alert, FallOut, and Metro were made.

October:
- Post-apocalyptic memes: Even though the fear of a Third World War breaking out in September was quickly proven false, many of these memes continued to flood the internet.
- Deus Vult
- Happy Birthday to this future President - Dated October 26, 2016 and the U.S. Presidential elections only a week away, many of Hillary Clinton's opponents would turn this tweet against her by making it into a meme.

November:
- Trump's victory on the 2016 United States Presidential Election
- Great Meme War of 2015-16
- Kekistan*
- Evil Kermit
* (OOC: Becomes created a year earlier by meme posters in this timeline)

December:
- Robbie Rotten voted the meme of the year

Second trailer for Peninsula released three days ago. Now I am 50-50 for this film. The trailer does not look too promising as it becomes a generic post-apocalyptic film, something like Resident Evil: Extinction, Mad Max, and Doomsday. I have a feeling it won't have the same character development as Train to Busan and it's animated prequel, Seoul Station.

What are your thoughts to the new trailer @Unknown @Ukron @HanEmpire @TrashMammal2019 ?
