Have they expanded their borders? If so, where?
I can see him coming to power as a result of growing anti-Chinese and anti-Korean sentiment which in OTL was based on immigration and history textbooks in the 1990s. This would also be possible with the rise of democratic China and Korea, which has maintained concern over Japanese denials over World War II...

Actually, I like it! Also, consider that some U.S. officials will support the Yamaragi administration as "the Japanese fighting back against globalism" or "Cultural Marxist" or whatever.

And well, considering what the U.S. government did IOTL, anything's possible really.
