English St. Lawrence River before 1700

Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about French North America, other than that they caused a great a deal of distress for the Thirteen Colonies in the 18th century. Is there a time before 1700 when England could have colonized the St. Lawrence, or could have taken it from the French early on (like the Hudson River from the Dutch) and become undisputed master of North America from Georgia to the Hudson Bay? If so, how would this affect the development of the colonies?

Ok, let's say England holds on to Quebec in 1629. What would they do with it? How would it affect America, considering that the French & Indian war and the Intolerable Acts would be butterflied away? Maybe the British government would try to clamp down earlier on colonial expansion, because I imagine the Anglos would colonize the Ohio much earlier.
