English in Scotland during the Civil War

When King Edward I, the Leopard of England, died on July 6th 1307 he was on route to Scotland to put down the rebellion of Robert the Bruce, To do this he had raised an army greater in size than any yet seen in the British Isles but before he could cross the border his old and sick body gave in and he died at Burgh-on-sands.

His son Edward II marched into Scotland to join up with his fathers army. Finding the army hungry he withdrew into England to get them a good meal and thereafter left Scotland alone until 1314.

During this period Scotland was in a state of Civil War between supporters of Robert the Bruce and supporters of John the Red Comyn. The Bruce had participated in the murder of the Red Comyn on holy ground and then had himself crown King of Scots and brought the country to civil war as a result.

With the English absent from the scene the Bruce was able to deal with all his opposition one at a time until he alone was the power in Scotland.

So the question is this; how would the presence of the English Army in Scotland effect the Bruce chances of securing power?
