England in Your Timeline?

Not a mickey take, just me playing of what could be some interesting topics.

So in your Alternate Timeline(s) what happens to England?

It varies depending on PoD.

With earlier changes I'm very prone to preserving the older shires (e.g. Hallamshire, Pecsaet/Peakset, Hwicce/Wychset), rather than using the ones imposed unilaterally by Wessex following the end of the Danelaw (the "traditional English counties"). I favour Mercia over the other Old English kingdoms, by virtue of having been born and grown up in Birmingham.

With later PoDs, I tend to introduce Provinces, as sometimes mooted during the repeated 19th century debates about electoral and administrative reform, making Yorkshire, East Mercia and West Mercia each into unified provinces for example.

Aside from fiddling with the Welsh border I tend to leave the borders alone, as I've not researched them enough. (I've tended to spend more time trying to move the Canadian border southwards, and the German borders outwards at the expense of France ;))

England is part of the UK, which is part of the EU. Although the UK retains control over its sovereign territory on Earth, all of its space operations are administered by the EU central government in Strasbourg. The UK keeps good relations with most all powers in space and a few EU colonies/outposts are populated by a majority of Britons. Most notable is the heavy mining/industrial colony on Mercury, known as New Manchester. The King registers as .04% deviated from "Homo sapien" baseline and has pays occasional visits to EU colonies with an appreciable number of Britons. As of 2440, the population of humans recognized as UK citizens stands at ~630,000,000. The King was the first foreign leader to visit Mars (Republic of Aries) after its rebellion and subsequent independence in 2219. Both the Pound and the Euro are used throughout the UK, though the Euro is the dominant reserve currency of the Solar System. The UK, using vast deposits of minerals found in the Asteroid Belt and its extensive private merchant fleet, decided to resurrect the Pound as one of only two of the Solar System's commodity-backed currencies. Though the Pound's prevalence is limited by the amount of commodities backing it, it is nonetheless viewed as a rock-solid currency. The UK, along with the rest of the EU and all other powers except the Republic of Aries, does not recognize the rights of artificial sentience. I know this is before 1900, but I figured I'd throw in my timeline. https://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=142828

Well, most of my ATL's are Future History. In the most recent one, which is a redux of one of my previous (and flawed) timelines, England is a part of Great Britain, which formed a more integrated CoN after a disaster in the late 1990's. Britain goes on to be, along with its Commonwealth Realms and Dominions, one of the three superpowers after a conventional WW3 in the mid-late 2070's. Eventually, with the formation of a global confederacy and later federation, Britain is one of the founding members.
The European Union goes on to form without them, but as a looser organisation than most would have in the 21st century. Partly due to the more diversified national interests by some strong member nations, e.g. Germany, Poland, Austria.
