I'm interested in possibilities that would force England to become more of a land power in contrast to the naval power it has been known as. Could it develop a solid hold on a good stretch of continental territory it possessed historically and become committed in the long term (centuries) to holding it? Or is it rather doomed to be kicked off the continent sooner or later?

What interests me is the drastic way this could change the foreign and domestic politics of the country, if it were possible. I think there'd probably be more of a standing army in the country, but a whole lot of things to go with it too- along the lines of a more centralised government, less rights for subjects, heavier taxes, and a smaller or later developing merchant class.

Does this sound reasonable? Any ideas?

In a wankish situation, could England become continental HEGEMON?
