England 1952: Princess Margaret becomes Queen

Now let me First say that I do like Queen Elizabeth and that I have lot of respect for her. She had made a Good Queen and has done her Job well. I like these Alternative History question because they are very interesting to think about and Imagine how history made have unfolded differently if something went a different way.

Okay now let just say for some reason in a Alternative History that Princess Margaret had became Queen in 1952 and not Elizabeth when her father died supposing that Elizabeth had died some years earlier (Charles or Ann would not have been born) leaving Margaret as the sole surviving child of George and Elizabeth and so she succeeds her father as king and in 2002 her son David would have succeed her as king when she died. How would Margret been as Queen? Would she have been popular? Would history have unfolded differently? Would the Monarchy have survived? Would the country be any different? What do you think? I have wondered about this. Coming from the same parents I think Margaret might have made a good queen but it hard to say if she would ave been as good as her sister was. Margaret would have also had the influence of her Mother like Elizabeth did. I do think the Monarchy would stil be around today no matter what,

I see you have a sneaky extra POD in there too. ;)

I don't think that Margaret would have made as good a Queen as Elizabeth. However IMVHO she would have grown into the role and the Monarchy would still exist in 2013. Would the UK be any different? Perhaps, but not in any major way.

We would know much more about the private lives of her children. I can't name them. Does she still divorce her husband?

Make her a Queen elsewhere...

...Canada or Australia, perhaps?

What if we have Commonwealth countries offered a resident Royal as Head of State after WW2?

India would probably refuse, but the Canadians, Aussies and NZs might agree...

...South Africa might want a descendant of the Kaiser.

Assuming Margaret is heir apparent, there's not a chance she would end up trying to marry a lowly pleb like Peter Townsend. (Which caused enough scandal IOTL, when she was only the Queen's sister) She would most likely be married off to a senior peer in the late forties; it would be a Charles and Di match. Boozing, domestic rancour, deep unhappiness and god knows what else would almost inevitably follow at some point. The end of the Victorian/George V conception of monarchy as the moral standard of the nation would most likely come several decades early ITTL, probably set against the backdrop of the swinging sixties. I doubt Margaret would be a very popular, or happy Queen as a result. Boozing herself into the ground above and beyond OTL's pattern can't be ruled out.

Yeah, Margaret as Queen is not something anyone would want to happen.
