In an interview on Meet the Press, Democratic Governor Eliot Spitzer criticized Republican challenger Rudy Giuliani for making the September 11th attacks a campaign issue. “I commend Mayor Giuliani and Governor Pataki for their efforts on that tragic day, but quite frankly, that couldn’t be less relevant to the challenges facing New York today.” The Giuliani for Governor campaign was quick to respond, citing the remarks as “unpatriotic.”

A draft urged Bloomberg to run for Governor himself, but he declined. Giuliani has earned criticism from the right, with pundits such as Rush Limbaugh blasting him as a RINO and moderates like Olympia Snowe giving high praise.
