Empire of the Rising Suns

As Japan grows they would have to eventually gain control of the Oil in the Mid East. I dont know how much they can get from Indonesia/Malaysia. If they had to secure the oil in the Mid East who would that put them in conflict with .... the US ?

Well, the Middle East is under control of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the British Protectorate of Iraq... post-war, Iraq is likely to become an independant Kingdom in any situation... I'm sure Japan could make SA or Iraq an offer...

Being part of NATO, Britain would be pretty stuffed. Could they prevent Japanese influence in the Mid East ?

That's the beauty of the nuclear war that Japan stays out of...the competition just basically killed itself....

There won't be anyone to oppose the Japanese extending their sphere into the Middle East, not for decades.

As for the Japanese being Sinified, I don't think its very likely. I'm absolutely sure that it won't go the other way around though.

After a couple of centuries, most of the normal Japanese living on the Mainland would find themselves assimilated. Even the upper-class might eventually find more grounds with the Chinese than with those a sea away. Of course, the Home Islands could pour people into China, but I would think that's a losing venture. However, Japan will not become an integral part of China, at least not any time soon.

Well it depends how the Japanese move in... I don't know anything about how their colonization plans were OTL, but I see two scenarios: One is if the Japanese move in among the Chinese, which probably produces the scenarios you have- Japanese settlers eventually become more assimilated... though, if the Japanese depopulate regions before they're settled, that makes it take more time.

Perhaps an apt comparison would be the Japanese playing the role of the Romans and the Chinese playing the role of the Greeks?

That would really just be a continuation of the old Japanese-Chinese relationship, so it makes sense...

Now I have some strange idea of a far future "Byzantine Japan" based in Beijing, that doesn't control any of Japan, but claims to be the legitimate Empire of Japan...

That would make an excellent spin-off timeline, Imajin.

So the Byzantine Nippon might totter along until about 3500 CE?
