Empire Of The North

WI Sweden had been able to defeat Russia & created a Swedish Empire in the 17th-18th century?
Honestly? It wouldn't have lasted. Sweden just lacked the population to be a true great power. In any protracted war its population would be easily stretched to the limit.

Hmm, maybe a Dutch Empire might be more likely then?
If the Netherlands can keep at least a portion of modern day Belgium it has a good chance of being able to both expand further in the colonial sphere as well as industrialize faster than anyone bar Britain.

There is a certain neighboring country with a substantial population and a history of electing Swedes to the throne. What Sweden could not hold on her own, perhaps a Polish-Lithuanian-Swedish Commonwealth could. It would be difficult to get Charles XII onto the Polish throne, though--not that he couldn't smash Augustus' armies, but the rampant looting and plunder tended to turn the populace against him. EDIT: And, of course, that Charles was a devout Lutheran.

And, of course, to become a king of the PLC and to be able to rule it were not the same thing. 🤪

Anyway, putting aside all improbability, in the terms of adding a power the Deluge was a better time frame because by the time of the GNW the PLC was more of a handicap than a bonus militarily.

The only way I can see Sweden as a great power is if Charles X managed to take Copenhagen in 1658 before the Dutch arrive and perhaps force Denmark to give up al of norway instead of just Troindheim. Then they would have to inegrate the former Danes which might work because the plans that Charles XII implemented was acuttaly his father but it would probably take decades to integrate Norway.
But Scania would be faster because of it's more conected with the rest of Sweden and Danish and Swedish was way more similar than today

Russian domination of Eastern Europe isn't an assured thing at this point (although likely).

- Have the Swedes defeat the Russians in the Great Northern War.
- Kill Peter the Great and replace him with a isolationist, anti western tsar.
- Have the Ottomans and Crimeans go on the offensive, burn Moscow to the ground a second time, and permanently control Ukraine/Southern Russia.
- Get the PLC to see Russia as a larger threat than Sweden.
- Encourage German immigration into Baltic colonies to boost population and try to get Germans to assimilate to Swedish culture.
- Have Sweden establish an alliance system with the PLC and Ottomans, perhaps Britain and Persia as well if the Great Game still happens
