Suppose somehow Theodore II Laskaris does not die of epilepsy in 1258. He laid the groundwork for the reclamation of Constantinople from the Latin Empire but also might have been able to retake much of central Anatolia from a Mongol-weary Rum Seljuk government. His wife was also the daughter of the ruler of Bulgaria, who himself had no sons and thus his own son John IV Laskaris would have a claim on the Bulgarian throne. Should Theodore survive another decade or two, how does this alter the Aegean/Anatolian landscape in the years to come?
