Emperor of the French Republic

On May 28, 1804, the day that the Senate proclaimed the First Consul, Napoleon Bonaparte to be "Emperor of the French Republic", a state banquet was held at St. Cloud.
Why was Republic included in the title if Napoleon intended to be Emperor?
Was Napoleon the originator of the title "Emperor of the French Republic"?

Yes he was. The original styling of Napoleon I was as Emperor of the French Republic. In the beginning he wanted to emphasize the continuity of his rule with the revolutionary tradition of the republic as opposed to the monarchy of the ancien regime. Of course as time went on he became less the Emperor of the French Republic and more the Emperor of France (and points East), but in the begining of his Empire it was important to maintain the image of continuity with the Republic.

Because Napoleon wanted to make it seem like he ruled a Republic, like all of the "Democratic Republics of XYZ" which are dictatorships today.
