Emperor Franz Ferdinand

If Archduke Franz Ferdinand hadn't been assassinated and Emperor Franz Joesph had died on schedule and Ferdinand became emperor in 1916 what would be it's effects? Assuming a world war hasn't happened yet.

Im pretty sure he advocated federalizing the dual monarchy to appease the various ethnic minorities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire by allowing them a say in local and provincial policy and legeslative matters while still maintaining a unified military policy, forgein policy and economic policy at an imperial level so maybe Franz Ferdinand ushers Austria-Hungary into the an age of democratic federalization and multi-ethnic stability (for the most part) vis-a-vi interbellum Czechoslovakia in OTL. But that might require vast amounts of handwavium for all I know

The Hungarians would definitely oppose such a drastic reform of the Empire and Franz Ferdinand might cause a civil war if he still tries to reform (the Hungarians had their own army units y'know).

Lets not forget Europe is a powder-keg and that you can set it off from a different match that butterflies away Franz Ferdinands death. Then in this new scenario take it their is a costly CP victory or more or less the status quo after years of fighting, then have Austrian troops move into Hungary to put down a Communist Revolution ( You could butterfly a Russian victory at Premzel and then have Russian troops terrorising Hungary more as justifaction for this) and then FF force Fedralisation with the Hungarians in no postion to resist

Bright day
And some of these units are Croatian, Slovak, Romanian, Serb or you know actually loyal to Emperor and King.

The more probable matter is that Hungarian nobility will block Franz Ferdinand in legislature and he won!t be able to do much. So Cisleithanien will be modern democratic country and Transleithanien will remain stuck in feudalism.

I never said the Hungarians would win a civil war :p but it would weaken the Empire severely.

Franz Ferdinand would probably succeed but there would be growing pains...

hostility from the Hungarian quarter surely...perhaps even rebellion but as said the Croats, Roumanians and Slovaks would have much to gain. the Hungarians could even face revolt from within their own army units. I suspect a pro Imperial coup within Tansleithania to chop the monster off at the knees could be planned.

As such even so the Hungarian provinces that might result would probably encompass more territory than the Hungarian state that resulted in our postwar.

A dissadvantage for the pro-Imperial troops is that they rely on Kadets, and during WW1 there was a distinct lack of them (Because of the general killing fields) so that would put any pro-Imperial force at a significant disadvantage as they relied on Kadets to keep the force together.

What I was getting to that rebellion against Emperor and King is dificult, hard to launch and generally last resort. Part of establishment will remain loyal and you do not know which part of establishment it will be. Part will take position of loyal opposition. Part will feel rebellious, but will be too apathic to rise up. And the part that would rise up cannot just broadcast it on the radio. 1848 was period of widespread civil unrest which grew into open rebelions in several places. The idea that Franz Ferdinand proposes new federal bluepring for monarchy and Hungarians rise as a single man aganist him is... silly.
