Elizabeth Stuart: Alternate marriage options

So, considering a timeline where Charles I marries someone other than Henrietta Maria, and was wondering, James seemed intent on a Catholic marriage for his son to go with the Protestant one he'd arranged for his daughter. So, what I'm wondering is this, the year is 1612, Henry Frederick has just died, Liz Stuart is as of yet unwed or committed, who are the options for her, other than Frederick V Elector Palatinate?

I know one consideration was Louis XIII, not sure how serious that was though.

Firstly, nit-pick, but you need an earlier POD than 1612 because Henry died during the engagement celebrations pre-wedding to Frederick V. In fact IIRC it was because he'd been swimming in the Thames and then gone to play reel tennis with Frederick.

But that's a nitpick.

They considered quite a few matches, but Louis XIII was never a serious contender IIRC. I think the main ones were Gustavus Adolphus and a number of German and Dutch princes and dukes. Perhaps your POD is for Sweden not to go to war with Denmark in 1611 over Lappland. This was what really put the brakes on a Swedish match, given that Elisabeth's mother was Danish and her uncle was the King of Denmark. Otherwise many preferred Gustavus as a better match for her than Frederick as he was much higher status.

Alright very interesting.

She did have a lot of kids with Frederick OTL, I suppose she'd have a few with Gustavus. And I suppose such a marriage would further encourage English action during the thirty years war, perhaps on the side of Sweden and France?

She was pretty fertile, and a surprising number lived to maturity for the time period. Although it was helped that the marriage was such a love match - not sure how fertile or loveable Gustavus might be in comparison.

As for 30 years war - eh. Maybe. Everything about English involvement in the 30 years war is an ''eh, maybe'' sort of thing. Parliament, James I, public opinion, Scots opinion, religious groups, etc etc. It was very complicated in terms of not just whether intervention should take place but also how and who pays. It's very hard to say I think. You might see more English volunteers and mercenaries fighting alongside the Swedes like the Scottish did in the period though, at the very least.

Okay that is true. Regarding Gusatvus I suppose that the time he's away fighting so much during the time period, would likely mean they're not all that close. In regards to the thirty years war itself, would Frederick V still be offered the crown as he was otl, without the British connection?
