Elizabeth Instead of Mary

Both before (c. 1537-1543) and after (1545) his first marriage to his cousin, D. Felipe II was offered as a husband for the young Elizabeth Tudor, future Gloriana.

WI this were to happen?

I'm not sure it would have been in Don Felipe's interest to have the bastardized daughter of an Infidel ruler to have been his eventual queen at this time. Perhaps he'd have offered to make her his mistress on the grounds that as a bastardized king's daughter, that's the BEST she could hope for [not knowing history would blow that notion out of the water].

Best interests or no, the negotiations offering her under her bro's regency hinged on a double marriage - her to Felipe and Edward to Juana (OTL Crown Princess Consort of Portugal).

I can't find the deal for her dad's offer though, but everytime the sealing of an imperial alliance was broached, a marriage between first Mary and the duke of Beja (after Karl V married) was part of it, and later, marrying Liz to Felipe. As SpaceOddity has pointed out in his TL, Karl V wangled his way to signing treaties with Henry even when he was branded as a heretic by the pope and excommunicated.

Well...Elizabeth would be more likely to produce half-Tudor Habsburg babies than Mary was OTL, BUT HVIII isn't going to let his younger "bastard" daughter marry before his older "bastard" daughter. So, I think one of Mary's betrothals needs to come off - perhaps to the ill-fated dauphin during days of a French alliance? Although, I'm not sure when that might be without keeping Anne Boleyn around longer (maybe after Jane Seymour's death? When Henry was considering a French match for wife no. 4), or to the duke of Beja if we're going imperial.

The thing is, Elizabeth was mooted for several Habsburg and Habsburg-related princes (Felipe II of Spain, Archduke Ferdinand II and Archduke Karl of Austria, the duke of Savoy, a Portuguese infante (I assume Prince Joao) and the duque de Segorbe) before and after Mary's reign. However, it's a long way from bended knee to altar steps, but Liz's perceived illegitimacy might not be the reason the plans get scuppered.

Hell, I know this was more to block against the pro-French queen of Scots, but Felipe had no problem with legitimacy when he was considering her as a wife should her sister die in childbed.

That said, it would make for interesting offspring.

I do wonder, if the Spanish marriage were replaced by something closer to home, could we see Henry IX popping out or has that ship sailed by the time she takes the throne.

Since Felipe is marrying Liz, Mary is either dead or married to Beja, what future does this bode for Élisabeth de Valois?
