I'm currently taking a history course on Elizabethan England, and according to one of my texts, aside perhaps from the Dudley situation, the closest Elizabeth ever came to marrying came in 1579. Now, perhaps I simply have a bad source, but the text argues that for a very brief period, Elizabeth was actively seeking the marriage rather than finding a way out of such a course of events as had been her practice in earlier years. I understand that the political winds were very much against such a match, so I'm not sure how feasible it actually was. Nevertheless, the situation is an intriguing one for the simple reason that it is the last moment we could have seen Elizabeth married. I searched to see if there was a thread about this, but I couldn't find it. I apologize if I'm wasting the time of the experts in this field, but let's say Elizabeth and her "frog" are married around that time. What are the implications? Will we see a return to the unrest that greeted Mary's marriage to King Phillip II? Again sorry if this is a completely implausible scenario...
