Something I've noticed on the board is that whenever the topic of Elizabeth I marrying a Habsburg comes up, the options are usually 1) D. Felipe II of Spain or 2) Archduke Karl of Inner Austria. In reality, there were several other candidates in the offing for Elizabeth's hand during her sister's reign, especially as it became more and more apparent that her sister would remain childless.

Others batting for team Habsburg who stepped up to the plate were:

1) D. Carlos, Prince of the Asturias
2) Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I
3) Archduke Ferdinand of Austria (a.k.a. Mr. Philippine Welser)

Now in the event that Elizabeth refuses the first two (Felipe being already married to her sister and it being bad etiquette to push a suit for Karl before Ferdinand Jnr), Option 3 looks to be the most palatable.

I don't know much about Ferdinand Jnr, but say he and Elizabeth get married somewhere during Mary's reign. There is a small window between Mary I's death and Ferdinand's OTL marriage to Fraulein Welser wherein they can still marry if not already.

How might Mary take it? Would Ferdinand be a relatively uninvolved consort a la Francis of Lorraine/George of Denmark? Or would he take Felipe's role as a model and attempt to be crowned as King Ferdinand I alongside Elizabeth?

Please discuss

Hmm it would be quite an interesting marriage, I think that he might well try to take an active role, and perhaps push the counter reformation

Whether he takes an active role or not, provided he and Liz succeed where Pip and Mary failed (having an heir, maybe a spare too), France might just start shitting themselves, cause Habsburg England is here to stay

Aha indeed, I do wonder how the dynamic between the two of them would be. Considering Elizabeth was quite dominating.

I don't say he wouldn't be a figurehead mostly, but considering the fact that from what I know, he seemed to mostly avoid politics (at least in comparison to his micromanaging cousin, and two political brothers), I think Elizabeth would jealously guard her crown, a case of "I wear the crown! not you, and if I am to make mistakes they will be my mistakes!"

Okay now that is true.

I do not know much about the subject, but was not England at that time in history already under Church of England with Elizabeth at its head? What would happen with religion in case she marries a Catholic ruler? Does the Church of England fall back under Rome, or does her husband to be converts? Could someone please explain.

Well, Lizzie can't technically acknowledge the Catholic church as the state religion, because that would mean accepting that she is a bastard at worst, or born of a bigamous of marriage at best. So I think she's likely to follow the high church road that she followed OTL, but maybe with a marriage to a Habsburg archduke she's less of a target for the papacy.

On the other hand, what happens when Queen Elizabeth and Prince-Consort Ferdinand, (I know Guildford DUdley was supposed to be created duke of Clarence or Kendal by Jane IIRC), start popping out babies. Those kids are going to be the legitimate heirs to England, unless you accept the Stuarts as the rightful heirs because Elizabeth is a bastard etc. Although I could definitely see a match between England/France or England/Scotland in the offing, esp. since OTL the prospective son and daughter of Elizabeth were betrothed to the prospective son of daughter of Mary, Queen of Scots and François II
