IMO the best Israeli policy, if they suceeded to put their man in place of president of Syria, would be to leave him alone, instruct him that he has to be a perfect Arab president of Syria, he has to be very anti-Israeli in retorics, maybe even in actions too, and in the same time, deliver all important informations to Israel.;)

There was a book written recently about Irish rebel and Prime minister , De Valera, who in his actions became the greatest partitionist/free stater despite condenming any part of Ireland being kept under British rule officially, the book suggested he was Britain's greatest spy in Ireland and had been turned during incarceration post the 1916 rebellion1 TBH I found it a bit far fetched!
Eli would have to become like this De Valera!

Why? Wouldn't it be nice to have a Western agent leading a pro-Soviet government?

I meant the US learning that an Israeli agent leading a pro-Soviet Arab state, attacking a pro-US Arab state (Jordan) ether directly or by funding or supporting anti-Jordanian Palestinian forces.

live out his life in Argentina or somewhere, with a secret MOSSAD guard detail.

No, he'd go back to Israel and re-assume his identity as Eli Cohen. What makes you think he'd go to Argentina? Israel was his country and his where his wife and children were, plus he could be protected much better while inside Israel than abroad.

Either the Mossad publicly reveals his true identity to embarrass the Syrians, or Kamal Amin Thaabet "dies" or disappears, a bunch of theories as to whodunnit comes up, the new Syrian regime doesn't care, and the issue is practically forgotten in a few years.

my guess is the first (so long as he didn't do anything overly distasteful) it would breed extreme paranoia all over the Arab world, maybe leading to many over throws... moderate Arab governments would have a hard time after Cohen's coming out

If Cohen got exposed, it could cause a worldwide spike in antisemitism("See? The Jews really do control everything!"). Regardless, this is an insanely interesting scenario.

assasinated in 1966 by extremists because of his moderate views towards Israel..." etc
That’s one of the more unlikely possibilities. Kamel Amin Thaabet wasn’t just promoted because of his professional reliability; he was also one of the more hard line members of the Syrian cabinet, regularly expressing the wish to ‘march on Tel Aviv’. Expect Cohen to maintain the persona, passing information on of any planned attacks, possibly undermining such plans in small details but otherwise maintaining his position.
