Election Challenge: MacArthur (D) vs. Taft (R) in 1952

Who wins?

The challenge is as follows: MacArthur is sacked by President Dewey in the analogue to the Korean War (which may not even be in Korea or Asia). He thus seeks the presidential ticket in 1952, Eisenhower-style, except on the Democratic ticket. Robert Taft, the elder statesman, plays the Adlai Stevenson role here. Who wins?

Alien vs Predator 1952 would probably be better for America than this scenario.
Agreed. Both men are a little...unpalatable. Taft was a Old Conservative who wanted to repeal the welfare state and New Deal and all those safety nets, opposed the Unions and favored isolationism. MacArthur was a hard headed military type who thought nukes need not always be off the table. Taft is more experienced but MacArthur is probably more populist.

Then I'll have to call ASB. MacArthur's not going to change his views and the Democrats would never nominate him. Not a chance in hell.

Can we get Henry Wallace to run again? Because I'm willing to take him over Bob "Smother the New Deal and destroy the Unions" Taft and Douglas "World War III" MacArthur.

I'll vote for a Taft/Nixon ticket. That way we have POTUS Nixon in 1953 and Taft doesn't have time to FUBAR on foreign and defense policy.

I stole it from the AH Chain by the late HueyLong. Prior to the 1952 elections, President Thomas Dewey pulls a Truman and sacks MacArthur during the Korean War. As a result, Mac runs as a Democrat to take revenge.

Douglas MacArthur [/B]Arkansas, General

Pros: Only candidate with an anti-Communist record to trump Dewey's, great national popularity, military experience, possible compromise candidate
Cons: Little ties to Democratic Party (He is here due to being sacked by a Republican. He held no ties before, and was suggested as Eisenhower was by some Democrats), controversy over the war, alienation of liberals

Once the delegates find out what MacArthur thought of the New Deal they won't be so keen on a MacArthur nomination. Eisenhower is at least semi-plausible because he's a liberal Republican, while MacArthur is a domestic Taftite. HueyLong's a banned nutty troll, so that's not the best example to pull.

The AH Chain ruled though! And he wasn't nutty, he just had a sockpuppet.

Dammit, the Dems will never have a high-ranking military commander running for president besides Wesley Clark. Except maybe for Admiral Fallon.

George Marshall was one of the hawks who wanted not just to give financial aid to western europe, but he wanted to roll back communism in europe (which would no doubt mean ww3)

Frankly if I could only vote MacArthur or Taft, I would vote for neither and I would flee the country and move to Britian to wether the oncomming nuclear war between USSR and USA
