Egypt, Nubia and the Crusades

If the 5th Crusade against Egypt had succeeded, how would Egyptian-Nubian relations have fared? Would the now western dominated Egyptian government attempt to convert the monophysite Nubian royalty to Roman Catholicism? How would this have affected the future development of the Nubian kingdom?

The 5th Crusade couldn't have had more than transitory success, and by this time, Islam had already made large inroads into Nubia. Once the Crusaders are evicted, Egypt will probably be more militantly Islamic, and that will have an impact on Nubia as well.

The Nubian states had at that point largely collapsed internally and relied on Bedouin tribesmen as mercenaries to control their lands. The tribesmen eventually intermarried with the Nubian nobles and since they were Muslim, so became the Nubian nobles.

You'd have to change all that in some dramatic fashion.

Also, not all Nubian states were 'monophysite'. Some were Melkite, maybe even until the end. They also often lacked properly educated bishops, since they had to recruit them from Alexandria or wherever.

I'm afraid the POD would have to be a bit earlier than that. Maybe have the Second Crusade or an alternate analogue to it be directed at Egypt instead. The Fatmids were not exactly in the best of shape at the time. Have the Crusaders direct their attention and conquer Egypt. As for forcibly converting the Coptic population, it wouldn't do them very good. In fact, they would do better just tolerating the Coptic Christians who at this time were still the majority if not a large minority in Egypt. I suppose Italian city states get their autonomous trading quarters within the majority Crusader cities in exchange for having their men serving in their army. Copts would probably have a second-class citizen status in the kingdom while the Muslims and Jews are down in the bottom.
