What would be required to have Egypt ruled by Pharaoh, even a "Constitutional One" today and its populace adhere at least in the majority to a religions recognizable / arguably continuous with that of ancient Egypt? This doesn't mean that Egypt was never conquered, but that somehow it continued it earlier tradition of Egyptianizing or eventually overthrowing its conquerors, and avoiding Islamicization, Christianization, or much in the way of Hellenization.

robertp6165 did a timeline with this goal a long time ago. His thesis was that the Egyptians could stave off pretty much all their problems by (re)opening the gold trade with sub-Saharan Africa, giving the state enough cash to invest in social and military reform.

Well, I guess I'll search for it. But now all you've gone and done is make me sad.
