Egypt and the Sudan

Let's suppose that on January 1st 1956 Sudan's control was ceded entirely to Egypt by the British in exchange for the Sinai and Suez. What sort of butterflies would result from this?

During the Cold War, the USSR backs Sudanese separatists against Egypt, or the US backs Sudanese separatists against a USSR-backed Egypt. Either way it won't last forever, IMO. The decades after 1956 were so full of different factions backing different groups in different countries that it's almost silly to think an Egypt-dominated Egypt-Sudan could last...

Why would Egypt do this? They lose control of one of the most valuable shipping routes in the world, in exchange for a lot of restless Sudanese.

Nasser would never agree to this, IMO. Egypt controlling Suez was about national pride as much as economics or anything else. Sudan is not a good trade for national dignity.

This.
A good number of Sudanese were quite vocal in their unwillingness to be ruled from Cairo. And don't forget the divide between the Northern and Suouthern parts of the country.
