Effects on racial attitudes in Europe of successful reconstruction

In OTL Darwin's ideas were perverted to endorse racial (and in fact class) injustice.

WI The Reconstruction had been more radical and successful. Perhaps somehow Andrew Johnson is persuaded that former slaves are his natural allies against the old ruling class of the South.

Would racism be weaker in Europe?

On the other had might the European establishment fear America more. In OTL in the Ante Belum period many radicals saw America as a whole as a model- much as the left misunderstood the USSR. Of course the existence of slavery was always seen as a blot.

That idea might have been stronger for radicals had slavery been defeated but less attractive to the Imperial ruling classes of Europe

You'd probably see both reactions, but the likeliest mainstream position would be "See, this civilising mission thing *works*. A few more centuries of occupying Africa and we'll be there, too."

Europeans by and large liked Christian, hard-working, tame savages. It made them feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Ever read Sherlock Holmes' "The Adventure of the Yellow Face"? That's your bourgeois mainstream.

Racism in Europe would not have been affected at all.

Ante-Bellum, the US was seen as eccentric for hanging on to slavery when most of the advanced nations had abandoned it. Now, it would be seen as eccentric for treating coloured races on an equality with whites. Europe was the centre of the world, and would have gone its own way pretty much regardless of what an ex-colony did. It would be well into the 20C before anything happened to even slightly modify that attitude.

FTM it's not even obvious that much would really change in America. After all, Jews had all the civil and political rights that Southern Blacks would have got from a successful Reconstruction, yet that didn't stop them from facing all sorts of discriminations in private life. Much the same could be said for Negroes in the North. There would be the occasional token Black on the Supreme Court and suchlike, but life on the ground floor would go on much the same.
