Effects of US Victory in 1812 on Napoleonic Wars?

Hey Guys,

The question is pretty simple, if the United States had managed to capture and still occupy the 'Canadas' (excluding island colonies and Rupert's Land), what would be the effect of this on the British effort in the Napoleonic Wars? Would it only be minor with the British quickly securing a peace-deal with the US to try and bring peace in the West? Or would it harm the British war-effort as the British send forces to try and cling to what territories they have left and also to try and recapture the Canadas?

Or would something different had happened? If so what do you think would've happened?

If the US is fortunate then after Napoleon is defeated the British settle for the US surrendering everything gained. If not the US is going to lose quite a bit more.:(

Options...

IF Napoleon is defeated, I can see the British, tired of war, offering to make peace without forcibly retaling Canada. One option, IMVHO, would be for the USA to return Canada to the Brisish, but with all (or most) of the territories that were in dispute awarded to the USA. There might be some oney changing hands as well, either way, depending on the post war situation.

A very successful war would give the US a strong position. Even failing annexation of Canada, the US is very likely to benefit in the far West. Perhaps the Pacific Northwest is written off by the British? It's not as if they were using it at the time.

Here the US holds something the British want back and while it would be sensible for the US to realize that without Napoleon the British are liable to enjoy crushing superiority I somehow fail to see it as likely that a briefly victorious US would suddenly sue for peace and surrender any gains made.

Admiral Matt, or the British decide to spend a greater effort in the future finding loyal colonists for such areas.:(

Given that the British government always saw the retention of Canada as a risk, it is unlikely that they would launch war after war to retain what some viewed as a near worthless tract of snow. It is more likely that if, as the original poster said, Great Britain lost big in the War of 1812 then they would become even less interested in retaining their North American possessions.

But an American victory of this scale requires a POD beyond just...America does awesome in the War of 1812. New England needs to be on board to support the war effort, some serious focus needs to be put on building a Navy that can at least make amphibious landings difficult for the RN and it would be a good idea if Britain was still facing a serious threat in Europe. So we would need a POD at least as early as the Chesapeake Incident (1807) to galvanize the US in a war effort and have Jefferson behave in a way that makes military sense by supporting an enlargement of the Army and Navy. Even better would be to have Napoleon not launch his invasion of Russia so he remains a real threat to Britain during the war in North America.
