Effects of Russian influence over Korea after Russian victory in Russo-Japanese War

Let's say Russia won a crushing victory over the Japanese in 1905, thanks to army modernization and political reforms in one POD. Russia is granted Manchuria by the time the Chinese Revolution. But how about Korea? Does it become a protectorate or annexed by Russia? And what are the effects of Russia dominating affairs over Korea? And the Russian influence?

Didn't Empress Myeongseong wanted to forge an alliance with Russia before she was tragically killed? Russia could certainly guarantee Korea's independence.

I think Russia would have ruled with a much lighter hand than Japan, due to sheer distance. Korea would have had its foreign policy dictated by Russia, and it would have been open for Russian companies to exploit, but it wouldn't have been annexed, and there wouldn't be any attempts at mass colonization and assimilation of the Koreans. Overall, better for Korea, IMO.

Motion seconded, Russia couldn't rule Korea the way they ruled the Poles or the Ukrainians even if they had wanted to do so.

Russia gets its warm water ports, businesses get lucrative contracts, Asia in general gets a lot more Russian influence than OTL.

The thing with Japan was they had it in their mind to "Japanize" the Koreans and were in a convenient position to do it, the Russians simply were not.

The Russians are next door to Korea, but they'll have to go through Manchuria first. Other than that, expect to see a Korean version of the Persian Cossack Brigade in the form of a Koryo Cossack Regiment.

Or, is it possible for Russia to annex Korea and make it like Congress Poland, Korea is ruled by the Tsar, but the government is made up of ethnic Koreans

Actually, there is a common border between the two countries.

I don't know about a lighter hand, if Korea's lucrative enough, wouldn't the Tsar appoint a relative to move to Vladivostok to enforce his will?

Why would he?
Imperial Russia was mainly interested in dominating Manchuria.
It was even willing to accept limited Japanese dominance in Korea as long as Japan would acknowledge Manchuria as Russia's playground.

Uh, Manchuria is even more lucrative than Korea (it's 3 or 4 times the size to begin with).

Yes, and that affirms Grand Prince's claims.

I don't think Russia was all that interested in Korea in the end, especially if they were willing to more or less hand it to Japan in exchange for Manchuria.

In the "Japan becomes Communist" TL I'm slowly planning, I'm considering having Korea go to Japan or become truly independent, while Manchuria is firmly placed within Russian influence. One option is that the Russian Czarists, while they turn Manchuria into a semi-colony or protectorate, want to leave Korea as an independent ally to serve as a small counterweight to Japan's growth. They may help the Koreans undergo some modernizations.
