Effects of British ports in Palembang, Acheh and Riau

WI Stamford Raffles attempts at opening ports in Palembang, Acheh and Riau after the Napolionic Wars were more successful? Would the colonisation of Singapore and the rest of South East Asia be affected?

It probably means that northern Sumatra becomes British (and btw colonizing Acheh isn't as easy as you would think), There will probably still be Dutch outposts in India, Malacca remains Dutch leading to a different Malaysia and the Netherlands may never sell it Ghanese outposts. Of course some other deal could be made with the Dutch, maybe Dutch india (and Malacca?) for British Guyana or something?

True. Perhaps they would use the same they use the same strategy to get Penang there? (Offer desperate Sultans troops to battle their enemies in exchange for territory but don't give any troops at the actual battle and give some reason or another. Repeat until all of Acheh is under British control:p)

Well, we could establish a protectorate, as with Johore, not take their land away from them, just er control it for them for a while

A port in Acheh would not neccessarily meant that all of Acheh is occupied by the British, if Raffles had been involved then it probably would have involved some sort of settlement with the local leadership and been some sort of Malay Hong Kong. This affects the Dutch because a peace treaty between the British and Dutch stipulated that there would be no incursions by the British south of the Equator and no Dutch incursions north. The Dutch move into Acheh in the 1870s was a breach of that treaty and probably only attempted because the Dutch knew it wouldn't provoke a war. If there is a British presence in Acheh then the Dutch would have probably left Acheh alone and Acheh may still be independant today.

It was attempted because the Dutch had made a deal with the British selling their colonies in the Goldcoast for permission to conquer Atjeh. With British outposts in Northern Sumatra, the Dutch probably wouldn't have done anything in Acheh as it would be considered to be in the British sphere of Influence.
