The lands of the Burgundians were absorbed by the Habsburgs, but what might have happened if instead Burgundy could have continued for a while longer. What effect might it have had one France, and the Holy Roman Empire?
As long as the male line of the House of Burgundy doesn't die out then they would become Kings of France after Valois Angouleme dies out.Wasn't the head of Burgundy a descendant of John II of France? Or maybe John I? Could there be a uniting of Burgundy and France once the rest of the line dies out? They'd be looking back less than they did to find the Bourbons.
What led to such a rise in Protestantism in the Netherlands? IIRC Burgundy encompassed that area, too, though my mind's a bit sketchy there, partly because I think there were 2 places named Burgundy. But, it would be interesting if there was a large Huguenot population in the extreme north and south of France (if indeed the crowns merged a la Navarre and France).
