I'm leaving this WI open to any country ... would it be feasible for any government, post-WWII, to be able to keep some or all of its colonies? We'd have to change the US' position on independence, of course, but what other PODs would be needed?

Portugal immediately springs to mind as a country that was very unwilling to let go of its colonies, and I know the Dutch and the French had their moments as well. Is it possible for an occupying nation to subdue its colonies once the seed of independence has been planted in the colonies' minds? What would be the exemplary social, economic, and military policies that could lead a country into being able to stay a colonial power?
