Effect on American politics without WWII?

Say somehow the rise of the Nazis is averted and either the Weimer Republic survives or some generic right-wing government takes hold. Possibly wars would occur in the 1940s concerning the Pacific and some border issues that Germany held, but no global war.

What would be the effect on American politics without the Second World War and without the Second Red Scare as an effect?

No third term for President Roosevelt so the two term tradition remains entrenched ....abuse of executive power by American presidents not as entrenched as it now is....concept of a balanced budget still strong and no military industrial complex sucking all the money out of the economy :eek:

Fewer retired generals, or other military officers in Federal politics. The states National Guard will remain a half professional training program, and half social club with strong political overtones.

Assuming no European war, the internal mismanagement & economic sanctions by the US and other powers bankrupt Japan circa 1940 or 1941, forcing a negotiated peace & withdrawl from China. The Phillipines become nominally independant from the US on schedule in 1946.

In China a few battalions of Marines and a small Asiatic Squadron remain to enforce the US Open Door policy. The China Lobby remains a small force in US foreign policy.

I'd expect a national outlook similar to Germany today. A very strong nation with a lot of military and diplomatic potential, but hesitant to use more than a fraction of it. Perhaps national pride comes from still being an industrial colossus?

America was anything but hesitant in using force and clout in Latin America in the interwar years. If anything you'd expect a regional isolation stance that jealously guards its domain.

So basically something more like today's China, only without any economic-military rivals in the region to adequately challenge them.
