Effect of a 1960 Nixon Victory on the Space Race

How would the election of Richard Milhouse Nixon in 1960 have affected the space race? Would going to the moon have been as much of a priority? Would we have jumped from Gemini to Apollo as we did, or would space being a lower priority have meant that instead of jumping to Apollo we built the best Gemini spacecraft we could?

If not in the late 60s, when might we have landed on the moon? Would the Soviets have had a chance at beating us there if we were less intensely-focused on it? Could we have possibly started building space stations like the Russians did?

Well IMHO, the Soviet Successes with Sputnik, the Luna Probes, and Vostok were a major (possibly main) reason for Kennedy making his "We choose to go to the Moon" pledge when he did - diverting attention from the Bay of Pigs Fiasco possibly being another.

In fact, by 1967 Manned Lunar Missions was one of the very few Significant Firsts left to achieve with: Artificial Satellites; Living Creature in Space; then back Safely; Lunar Impact; Lunar Orbit; First Man; First Woman; First Multi-Crew Mission; First EVA; First Rendezvous; And First Lunar Soft Landing (some two weeks after Korolev's Death IMHO) having all been taken by the USSR.

I can see Nixon feeling the same need to upstage the USSR, to demonstrate that the US is actually ahead of them. To this end, an effort to Manned Lunar Missions is certainly a possibility, and being "his idea", he may be warmer to it.

That said, it should be noted that Gemini's development actually started after Apollo CSM, when it became clear that Apollo wouldn't be ready for years after the end of the Mercury Programme. And it's main purpose was to test every aspect of the Apollo mission that it could test - EVA, Rendezvous & Docking, and Endurance to name a few - in preparation for Apollo.

Nixon was heavily invested in the aerospace industry,so you could expect more spending on the space program.Nixon always did what was in his best interest.
