Edward VIII became Emperor of an Independent India

Let’s assume, the British Empire agreed with Indian independence in 1936, in exchange for the Windsors retaining its Imperial throne. Edward VII can this be Edward I of the Indian Windsor Dynasty, and Mrs Simpson his Empress.

The Emperor could declare that his legitimacy came from the Moghuls, to appease the Muslims, offsetting the effects of Caliphate Movement, and preempt Pakistan. For Hindus, since the president of India IOTL has always been Muslim, Sikh, or Dalits, they didn’t really lose anything. The Hindus set their eyes more on the post of Prime Minister, with its political powers.

In addition, an Emperor Edward I would make it easier to inherit the British Empire, not mentioning the huge benefit brought by a no Partition.

For Edward, despite losing the kingship, he gained an Imperial throne. Therefore, he would outrank his brother during Imperial visit to Britain. And the couple doesn’t need to be involved with the Nazis any more.

Since Edward and Simpson wouldn’t produce an offspring, his throne would theoretically pass back to Queen Elizabeth. Of course, the Indians wouldn’t want to share a monarch with Britain, so, Prince Charles could totally assume the post. This way, not only could Charles avoid being the crowned prince for six decades, he could happily marry Camilla, citing Edward’s precedence.

Princess Anne could thus become the heir to the British throne, other than a mere princess of Scotland.

William loses his claim to the British Throne, but becomes the Imperial Prince of India, which would be a nice bargain. And Diana would need to die at such a young age.

So, had the brits been a bit smarter, they would have kept the Indian Crown. Britain and Indiancould become brotherly nations, and India could keep its independence. Two generations of Britons and Indians, as well as two extended families would live much happier.

So, why didn’t Edward go to India? :winkytongue:

Um, no. If India kept the British Monarchy as its head of state, the George VI would assume that role once Edward abdicated.

No. Indians just wouldn't ever accept someone European monarch who isn't even Hindu or Muslim. Never gonna to work. And with my knowledge most of Indian independent leaders were republicans so they wouldn't swallow monarchy not matter is he from UK or India.
